Importance of the Phases of PECS: Phase I

I am a huge advocate for the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). But it makes me sad and frustrated when I hear people criticize the effectiveness of the system. So I thought I would take a few minutes to introduce Phase I of PECS:

  1. I think the people who criticize it don't realize the potential behind this strategy, and may just see it for the black and white intervention that it can be viewed as. Honestly, I LOVE PECS! It allows students who have limited to no verbal communication to communicate their needs and/or wants. All people deserve some ort of way to communicate and express themselves, and this is just another way of doing it.

I have also amplified PECS, and have taken it into social stories that develop more skills within the realm of communication. I feel like PECS can be a simplistic style of tackling communication, or it can be an intervention that can be used with other interventions to assist students with communication deficits.

Thank you for posting this up! It is a great resource!
